Ingredients
- 500g (1.1lb) Dry macaroni
- 150ml (0.75 cups) Single cream
- 250g (9oz) Mature cheddar, grated
- 200g (7oz) Gruyere cheese, grated
- 1 liter (4.25 cups) Water
- 400ml (1.75 cups) Milk (whole milk recommended)
- 2 tsp Onion granules
- 1 tsp Mustard (American or any type)
- to taste Salt
- to taste Black pepper
- optional Crispy fried bacon pieces, chopped
- optional Fresh chives, chopped
- optional Crispy fried onions
Instructions
- Combine the dry macaroni, water, milk, onion granules, mustard, salt, and black pepper into a large, heavy-bottomed non-stick pan.
- Place the pan over medium-low heat and bring the liquid to a gentle simmer. Cover with a lid and cook for 10-13 minutes, stirring frequently (every 1-2 minutes) to prevent the pasta from sticking to the bottom of the pan.
- Check the pasta for doneness; it should be just cooked through and al dente. If the liquid has absorbed and the pasta is still firm, add a splash more hot milk or water to ensure it cooks completely.
- Once the pasta is cooked, reduce the heat to low. Stir in the grated Gruyere cheese, grated mature cheddar cheese, and single cream. Continue to stir gently until all the cheese has melted completely and forms a gooey, creamy sauce around the pasta.
- Taste the macaroni and cheese and adjust seasoning with additional salt and black pepper if needed. Serve immediately while hot and creamy.
- Garnish with your desired toppings such as chopped fresh chives, crispy fried bacon pieces, or crispy fried onions, and a sprinkle of freshly ground black pepper for an extra layer of flavor and texture.
