Traditional Egyptian Om Ali by Reemaislam

Warm, buttery layers of baked puff pastry soaked in sweetened milk and cream with toasted nuts.

Ingredients

  • 400g (14 oz) frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 4 cup (1 l) whole milk
  • 1 cup (240ml) heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup (60g) slivered almonds, toasted
  • 1/2 cup (60g) pistachios, chopped
  • 1/4 cup (30g) raisins or dried cranberries
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F). Spread puff pastry on a baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown and crisp.
  2. Remove pastry from oven and let it cool slightly, then break it into bite-sized pieces into a large baking dish
  3. Scatter the almonds, pistachios, and raisins over the pastry pieces.
  4. In a medium saucepan, combine milk, heavy cream, sugar, and vanilla over medium heat; bring to a gentle simmer for 3-5 minutes until sugar dissolves.
  5. Pour the hot milk mixture over the pastry pieces until they are well submerged.
  6. Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 10-15 minutes until the top is bubbling and slightly golden.
