Homemade Cinnamon Applesauce by Katie Winter Richardson Vegan Recipes

Slow-cooked, naturally sweetened apples reduced to a smooth, fragrant purée with warming cinnamon notes.

Ingredients

  • 10 apples (such as gala, fuji, or honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and chopped
  • 1/2 cup water or apple cider
  • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup (optional, adjust to taste)

Instructions

  1. Combine the chopped apples, water or cider, cinnamon, and lemon juice in a large pot over medium heat.
  2. Cover and simmer for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are very soft and starting to collapse.
  3. Remove from the heat and let the apples cool for 5 minutes.
  4. Mash with a potato masher for a chunky texture, or blend with an immersion blender until smooth.
  5. Stir in maple syrup only if the apples need extra sweetness, then serve warm or chill for later.
